Woman sucked under barge drowns while fishing in Finley

A 46-year-old woman died Monday afternoon while trying to rescue her adult daughter as they were fishing along the shores of the Columbia River in Finley. The daughter was in a small inflatable boat when the current started to pull her under a commercial barge moored in the river about 4:30 p.m. The victim was on the shore and jumped in to try to save her daughter and was sucked under the barge, said Chief Lonnie Click with Benton Fire District 1.

Maryland judge agrees BWI Airport firing involved discrimination

An administrative law judge's conclusion that the termination of an African-American deputy fire chief at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport involved racial discrimination was correct, according to a ruling issued Monday. Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Glenn L. Klavans agreed with the November ruling that found Gregory Lawrence "had been terminated for an illegal reason, in violation of the prohibition against racial discrimination.

Part II - New Hampshire town, fire organization revamp procedures after chief stole $270K

Something as simple as the town finance administrator having a copy of a contract may have prevented the town's former fire chief from misappropriating more than $270,000 that should have gone into town coffers. Richard Fowler was sentenced July 1 in Strafford Superior Court to New Hampshire State Prison for 3 to 6 years and ordered to pay restitution for the amount he used personally, which is believed to be more than $216,100.

FDNY firefighters: Cops ‘gave no warning’ to firefighter shot by gang leader

Fuming firefighters say an FDNY lieutenant almost died because he wasn’t told by law-enforcement officials that the home he was racing into housed an armed Bloods gang leader suspected in two murders. The firefighter, James Hayes, was shot twice by suspect Garland Tyree in the smoky Staten Island home Friday morning.

Cincinnati firefighters concerned about streetcar wires

Cincinnati firefighters are wondering how they’re going to maneuver around the streetcar’s overhead wires in case the upper floors of a building along the route catch fire. “We’re concerned,” said Matt Alter, president of firefighters’ union. “We just don’t have enough information about what you can and can’t do around them.
