Another small blaze joins ranks of burns in Peninsula's wildfire season

Another lightning-sparked wildfire has been located in the Olympic Mountains, raising the total number of Peninsula fires to six this summer. The latest, the LaCrosse Fire, is located about 12 miles west of the Duckabush trailhead in East Jefferson County and was identified by aircraft Sunday near the LaCrosse Pass trail, said Celeste Prescott, spokeswoman for the Paradise Fire management team.

Stickpin Fire grows to 27,000 acres; evacuations still in place

Fire crews continue to arrive to fight the Stickpin fire in Ferry County Sunday. Crews were able to take advantage of cooler weather and mild temperatures Saturday, but the fire remains zero percent contained. It is now 27,343 acres in size. Firefighters say the west side of the fire is the first priority.

Update: One Pacific Steel worker has died after chlorine gas accident in Spokane

One of the workers hospitalized after an accidental release of chlorine gas at a Spokane steel recycling plant has died. Mike Tracy, a spokesman for Pacific Steel & Recycling, said the man died Saturday night. His name won’t be released until all family members have been notified, Tracy said Sunday.

One man dies evacuating Coyote Canyon fire in Fruitland

The Coyote Canyon fire is burning approximately 5,000 to 6,000 acres in Fruitland, and has burned several structures. Lyle Lehrbas is taking a look at what's left of his parents' home. The Coyote Canyon fire raged Friday night and burned almost everything they own. But it's not just losing items that's tough.

As fires erupted throughout Sacramento in recent weeks, journalists, politicians and the public flocked to the Sacramento Fire Department’s Twitter page. The Internet allows anyone with a smartphone to become a broadcaster, and the Fire Department is taking full advantage. Gone are the days when the agency’s public information officer would sit around waiting for calls from reporters.
