A passerby first alerted a resident at 2820 Grant St. to smoke venting from the shed around 10:20 p.m., said Bellingham Assistant Fire Chief Rob Kintzele. Firefighters rushed four fire engines to the scene.

A semi truck crash snarled freeway traffic for hours Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Bellingham. The southbound water tanker had been hauling a flatbed trailer and a faded yellow forklift around 1:30 p.m. when the flatbed — caught in the rainstorm — started to weave back and forth on Interstate 5 as it approached the exit to Northwest Drive, according to the Washington State Patrol.
