Brush fire burns 900 acres in Grant County; I-90 reopens

State transportation officials say Interstate 90 in Grant County has reopened in both directions Tuesday morning. A 17-mile stretch of highway was closed Monday after blowing dust and smoke from a brush fire made it unsafe for drivers. A spokesman with the Grant County sheriff's office said Tuesday morning that the fire has burned up to 900 acres and did not grow rapidly overnight.

Landscape fire spreads to Tacoma hotel

Firefighters were called to the Red Lion Hotel in Tacoma after fire in adjacent landscape spread to the building Tuesday morning. The fire spread to a stairwell in the hotel at 8402 South Hosmer Street. The side of the building where the fire occurred was evacuated. Firefighters could be seen breaking out a window, cutting holes through the stairwell walls and spraying water from the third floor.

Blue Creek Fire near Walla Walla chars 2,500 acres

The Washington State Fire Marshall's Office is alerting residents near Walla Walla of a fire that has already charred more than 2,500 acres. According to DNR officials, the Blue Creek Fire is zero percent contained and is burning ten miles east of Walla Walla. The fire is burning timber and short grass, officials said.

California City Council To Consider Emergency Care Fee

Those receiving emergency medical attention from Long Beach Fire Department personnel may soon be subject to a $250 fee, which fire officials hope will help offset costs for the financially strapped department. The First Responder Fee will be considered during a Long Beach City Council meeting Tuesday, July 21, and could potentially be implemented by mid-August if the council approves the resolution, according to Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal Rich Brandt.

D.C.: Fire Official Assigned to Metro to Boost Coordination

Metro has added a fire/rescue liaison to its "nerve center" following the fatal smoke incident in January. In an announcement Monday, Metro said the new staff member in the Rail Operations Control Center will help coordinate communication between Metro and first responders in the event of an emergency.
