Prosecutor: 'Many people could have died' in Seattle's South Park arson fire

Prosecutors say an apartment fire was a crime of domestic violence that could have killed many people. Thirty-three-year-old Ricardo Rodriguez is accused of setting fire to a South Park apartment complex with his ex-girlfriend inside on Saturday morning. According to charging documents, Rodriguez had a smirk on his face when he dropped a match onto pools of gasoline outside his ex-girlfriend’s apartment.

Slash fire near Neah Bay consumes 40 acres; update on other Peninsula fire

An estimated 40-acre blaze has put Neah Bay on the list of communities in the state with a neighboring wildfire this drought season. The fire has burned slash and 1-year-old trees along 200 Line Road southeast of Neah Bay, state Department of Natural Resources officials said Monday. The fire is on Makah reservation land about a mile from the nearest neighborhood, and though it is active, it is not expected to spread, officials said.

Kent: Apartment fire displaces family

Two adults and three children have been displaced following an apartment fire in the 23700 block of 110 Avenue Southeast this morning. The fire was first reported at 6:56 a.m. by the resident who said that there were flames coming from the clothes dryer of the first floor apartment. She also told the 911 call receiver that everyone had escaped safely.

Official: Only 1 percent of New Hampshire's firefighters are women

The director of New Hampshire Fire Standards and Training says bullying and a rigorous physical entrance exam are the principle reasons why only one percent of New Hampshire's 8,000 full-time firefighters are women. Director Deb Pendergast told the Portsmouth Herald that the agility test is given once a year for men and women.
