Off-duty Tennesssee firefighter catches baby dropped from third floor during blaze

Chattanooga firefighters battled a large apartment fire last night at the Hidden Creek Apartments on East Brainerd Road. An off-duty Chattanooga firefighter captured a baby after it was dropped from the third floor by the mother, according to Bruce Garner, fire department spokesman. The firefighter was identified as Lieutenant Vernon Lane, with Ladder 1 at Station 1.

Gang member in standoff after shooting FDNY lieutenant, setting house ablaze

A firefighter was shot by a Bloods gang member with a long rap sheet who set a Staten Island house on fire Friday morning when US marshals showed up to serve him a warrant, sources said. Authorities surrounded the house at 15 Destiny Court after the gunman – identified as 38-year old Garland Tyree – continued shooting, sources said.

Update: Circumstances of Spokane gas leak puzzle investigators

Investigators spent all day at Pacific Steel Thursday and are still not sure where the canister filled with the leaked chlorine gas came from. Several agencies responded to help investigate Thursday, including 26 people from the Fairchild Airforce Base. Pacific Steel representatives said they do not accept any chemicals, nuclear waste, or paint into the facility, so investigators said they are still trying to determine how the cylinder got into the plant in the first place.

Log truck loses its load on U.S. Highway 101 near Port Angeles after driver swerves to avoid animal

A fully loaded log truck spilled its load after a driver swerved to avoid an animal on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles on Thursday morning, the State Patrol said. A Port Angeles man driving another vehicle was treated and discharged from Olympic Medical Center after the wreck. Charles Simmon, 58, of Clallam Bay was not injured when he swerved to avoid a dog or deer in the eastbound lane between Laird and Dry Creek roads at about 6:28 a.
