Wisconsin fire departments invest in young people to recruit and empower future firefighters

Emmanuel Mielke was nervous when he started his first day as a firefighter in February at a station in downtown Madison. But he had a head start. Mielke already met some of his colleagues when they were his instructors at the NextGen Responders Academy, an emergency medical responder and fire training certification program for high schoolers.

Man displaced after mobile home fire in North Kitsap

A man escaped injury despite waking to find smoke filling his home early New Year’s Eve in North Kitsap. The cause of the fire, which displaced the man and destroyed many of his possessions, is thought to be accidental, a North Kitsap Fire & Rescue news release says. Seattle firefighters douse fire at encampment in South Lake Union

Seattle firefighters responded to a large fire at a homeless encampment in South Lake Union Monday afternoon. The fire started near 9th and Roy Street around noon. When firefighters arrived, multiple tents and wooden structures were found on fire. Fire crews were able douse the fire within 30 minutes.

Clark-Cowlitz rescues kayaker in Columbia River

A kayaker is being treated for hypothermia after being rescued Sunday night from the Columbia River. Chief John Nohr of Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue said the unnamed man in his mid-50s suffered “extreme hypothermia” and had “cardiac issues” when he arrived at the hospital. Fire that destroyed Suni's Pizza and Burgers in Shoreline investigated as possible arson

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A fire that destroyed a popular pizza spot in Shoreline is being investigated as possible arson. Customers know Suni’s Pizza and Burgers as a community staple for more than 40 years, and now it's a total loss.
