The Windber Fire Department kicked off the new year by receiving new equipment designed to help reduce the increased risk of cancer firefighters face, wtaj.com reported.

The new set of bunker gear comes from a $24,925 grant that Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation gave to the Somerset County fire department, the report said.

A reveal from Windber fire was held Wednesday in partnership with the Johnstown Firehouse Subs location, according to the report.

Firehouse Subs has given over $80,000 to first responder organizations in the Johnstown-Altoona area, the report said.

Fire crews in Walker say no one was hurt after firefighters battled a blaze at an apartment complex Monday afternoon. It happened around 2:30 p.m., and according to a post online by the Walker Fire Department, the fire started on a balcony off Weatherford Dr. NW. Multiple fire crews could be seen tending to large plumes of smoke and flames at Green Ridge Apartments near the Green Ridge strip mall off Alpine Avenue.

A dozen East Point firefighters will be redeployed after a late-night fire destroyed one of the city's fire stations.
