Clallam County Fire District 4 firefighters and paramedics had a difficult weekend as they responded to both a barn fire and a drowned surfer.
First they were called out at 12:25 p.m. Saturday to the barn fire a little over a mile past the Freshwater Bay road.
“It was fully engulfed by the time we rolled on the call,” Fire Chief Greg Waters said on Monday.

A marina warehouse in Mystic was heavily damaged in a four-alarm fire late Sunday night.
Multiple departments responded around 9 p.m. to Washington Street on the Stonington side of Mystic for the massive fire at the Seaport Marine Warehouse.
“It’s an older building that’s been around as long as I’ve been here which is 26 years,” said Bruce Flax, president, Mystic Chamber of Commerce.

Alabama has become the first state in the nation to add peer support training to its curriculum for new fire school recruits, thanks to funding from the Alabama Department of Mental Health and support from the Professional Fire Fighters of Alabama (PFFA).
According to reports, 37% of firemen and women have battled post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and firefighters are three times more likely to die on the job than those in other careers.
