The Martinsville Fire Department has a new tool that is taking them to new heights - a drone. "We wanted to be sort of ahead of the curve for the area in order to have the technology here," says Martinsville Fire Chief, Ted Anderson.

Opelika (AL) Fire Department Introduces New Headquarters

The Opelika Fire Station headquarters located at 1015 Avenue B has served as the department's headquarters for nearly six decades - but its entering retirement with the opening of the new headquarters building behind city hall. On Wednesday, the Opelika Fire Department celebrated its new building with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house.

The old headquarters building was built in 1961 with a price tag of about $38,000, said Opelika Fire Chief Byron Prather, and the need for a new, larger facility was becoming apparent with insufficient space and plumbing issues among other problems. Â

“We had a lot of plumbing issues at the other station. After about four firefighters got a shower, the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth one; they just about had to stand on concrete blocks because the water was slowly backing up,” Prather said. “The old station was just worn out altogether.”

The new station one – valued at about $3 million – is larger with upgraded amenities and features, including better plumbing.

Las Vegas Fire Captain Dies After On-Duty Crash

A Las Vegas Fire Department captain paralyzed in an on-duty crash almost 15 years ago has died. Thelonious "Theo" Adams, a captain and 13-year veteran of the department, was paralyzed from the neck down after a fire engine responding to reports of smoke in an apartment rolled over on Halloween night in 2003.

Leaky tankers and hoses. Ladder trucks without heat or air conditioning. Bald tires and worn brakes. Condemned storage buildings. Breathing apparatus approaching expiration dates. The trucks, training facilities and equipment used by the city Fire Department are in need of replacement or upgrades, and local officials are concerned that inaction could pose a serious safety risk to the firefighters and the general public.
