Developing a Program Document for Your Fire Station Project

A program document is created to communicate to designers, city managers, and your administaration what it is yuo want this statino to hold. This document starts at a very high level and works its way down. Throughout the process, Lynn Reda, principal, Hughes Group Architects, recommends that departments brainstorm, prioritize, and then monitor. Brainstorming allows leaders to understand what everyone's needs and wants are for the station. Once all brainstorming is complete, the department must prioritize what has become a very long list, and then ultimately monitor all work as it proceeds.

Reda cautions that visiting other stations for ideas to incorporate into a program document is a great idea but departments must be aware that what members might see in other stations might not apply to the culture of the station being designed.

LifeDoor™ to Launch Kickstarter Campaign

LifeDoor

When LifeDoor officially launched last year, a fast-moving swell of interest underscored the need to get the lifesaving device into the hands of consumers quickly. Building on that momentum, co-founders Joel Sellinger and Ben Docksteader are taking the patent-pending technology from prototype to production through a Kickstarter campaign, set to go live on June 5, 2018.

The concept behind LifeDoor springs from Sellinger’s experience as a firefighter, combining top-of-mind fire safety awareness with integrative technology. It is designed to close interior doors in a non-commercial setting, notify users via a mobile app when triggered by a building’s existing smoke detectors, illuminate the room and sound a secondary alarm.

"Abundant research, as well as my own on-the-job observation, points to closing your bedroom door as one of the most important things you can do in the event of a fire if you can't exit the home," Sellinger, also a parent, explained. "LifeDoor is the first smart home device to automate this process at a non-commercial level, so families can Sleep Safely -meaning one less thing to worry about."

This research prompted the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute’s 2017 “Close Before You Doze” campaign. Research data from UL shows closing a door can block hundreds of degrees of heat plus the deadly smoke and toxic gas from a fire – a lifesaving difference. This makes LifeDoor a timely solution to the unique dangers of modern fires.

LifeDoor turned heads at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January--one of only 20 percent of CES exhibitors to showcase their inventions in the specialized Eureka Park™ exhibition area. It took first place in the Techstars 90-second pitching competition, and wowed industry executives.

"LifeDoor is not just another gimmick,” Sellinger said. “It can and will literally save lives. This Kickstarter campaign will give our supporters a chance to show how much they really believe in us, and help us take this lifesaving device to the next level"

The limited time Kickstarter campaign starts on Tuesday, June 5. 2018. Those who sign up to be notified of the launch through the LifeDoor website are granted exclusive access to huge savings on early bird specials. Visit www.LifeDoor.io for more information.

ResponderX Nets $15K in Local Pitch Competition

College Station-based tech startup ResponderX took home a total of $15,000 in the fourth annual Texas A&M New Ventures Competition (TNVC) during the day-long event on Thursday, May 17. Sponsored by the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), the event awarded $350,000 in cash and in-kind prizes. Held at Kyle Field’s All-American Club, the event was attended by venture capital groups, intellectual property law firms, and technology development service companies from around the state, all examining the latest high-tech advancements in the fields of biotechnology, clean energy, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices.

ResponderX CEO Andrew Jarrett and Director of Client Relations Cody Blount presented the company’s TaskForce Tracker firefighter locator system at the event as one of 16 semifinalists invited to the competition. The initial field of 16 competitors was narrowed down to six teams who presented in the final round, with the remaining 10 teams competing in the elevator pitch competition. Blount’s delivery in the one-minute follow-up event bagged the top prize of $5,000, and was bolstered with the Research Valley Partnership Launch prize of $10,000.

The ResponderX TaskForce Tracker system is a firefighter locating device comprised of a device the size of a deck of cards which is worn on a firefighter’s protective gear that communicates with an apparatus-mounted computer. These two devices transmit data to a tablet managed by the incident commander or safety officer, which displays each individual firefighter’s exact location on an emergency incident scene. In the event of a mayday, rescue crews know exactly where to find the downed firefighter, rather than spending precious time searching for him or her. The ability to precisely locate firefighters inside of a structure has long been sought by firefighters, and is described as industry leaders at the “Holy Grail of firefighting”, as the current gold standard utilized to track firefighters is almost 30 years old.

Inspiration for the idea came to company founder and CEO Andrew Jarrett after the 2013 Knights of Columbus Hall fire in Bryan, which claimed the lives of Bryan Fire Department Lieutenants Eric Wallace and Greg Pickard, and severely burned firefighters Rickey Mantey and Mitch Moran.
