Middletown Fire Department: 8 Goals to Reach in Next Few Years

For the past several months, a strategic planning process has been underway that included input from residents, business leaders, firefighters and police to develop a plan to guide the Middletown Division of Fire.

“We’ve been reactive to issues and this allows us to be more proactive by planning things years out,” Middletown Assistant Fire Chief Tom Snively said of the 27-page plan released this week.

North Carolina Firefighters Prepare for Wildfire Season

Two dozen people are dead, hundreds more are reported missing and thousands of homes are destroyed as wildfires sweep through wine country in California. Here in North Carolina, wildfire season begins in just a couple weeks and firefighters in the Triad say what's happening on the West Coast can happen anywhere.
It's still not clear what caused the Atlas Fire to tear through California, but according to Carson, humans are to blame for nine out of 10 wildfires. That means almost all of them are preventable.

If you're going to burn leaves or anything else in your yard, first find out if you need a permit to burn. You can check your county's website or call your local fire department for that information.

Never leave a fire unattended and don't toss out lit cigarettes on the ground or while driving; it really can cause roadside fires.

Stoughton (MA) Uses FEMA Grant for Fire Equipment

The department has used a $164,000 Assistance to Firefighters grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to purchase close to two dozen new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus devices, an equal number of spare breathing bottles, 53 new face pieces and two new Pack-Finders, which attach to firefighters' equipment to help other department members locate them if they're in distress.
The assistance comes at a time when the department, like many others across the country, is grappling with staffing issues and other challenges. Another grant recently allowed the hiring of a handful of new firefighters to bolster the department’s ranks.

Stoughton has seen at least three significant house fires in the past two months, on Pearl Street, Prospect Street and Sumner Street.

Austin (TX) Fire Department Donates Used Fire Equipment to LBJ Fire Academy

Students at the LBJ Fire Academy will make good use of $70,000 worth of equipment donated to it by the Austin Fire Department (AFD) on Sept. 15.
Assistant Chief Aaron Woolverton said, “We’re donating 69 air packs and 15 turnout ensembles to a program at AISD … to help our young people consider a career in public safety and the fire service. We are very proud of this program and look forward to getting more life out of this equipment the Fire Department no longer needs.”

The LBJ Fire Academy, housed at LBJ High School, was established in 2006 and has about 200 graduates. The two-year program gives students the opportunity to receive firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) certification and college credit. Not all of the students will go into fire service. The medical aspects may spur some to go to into nursing or attend medical school. Others may attend the program for the challenge—and it certainly looks good on a college resume.
