Senate Passes Firefighter Grants Reauthorization

Congressional Fire Services Institute

From the Congressoinal Fire Services Institute (CFSI):

On August 2nd, the Senate approved S. 829, the AFG and SAFER Reauthorization Act, by unanimous consent. The legislation, which was unanimously approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on May 17th, reauthorizes the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG), the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER), and Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) grant programs through Fiscal Year 2023. Additionally, the legislation removes a “sunset” provision in the current authorizing statute that would eliminate the programs on January 2, 2018.

S. 829 was introduced by Senator John McCain (AZ) and Senator Jon Tester (MT), both co-chairs of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. Senator Susan Collins (ME), chair of the Fire Caucus, and Senator Tom Carper, a fellow Fire Caucus co-chair, are original co-sponsors of the legislation.

“We are very grateful to the Senate for taking action to reauthorize these critical, lifesaving programs that have had such an immense impact in communities across the entire nation,” said Bill Webb, Executive Director of the Congressional Fire Services Institute. “The passage of S. 829 is the result of a cooperative and unified effort by the national fire service organizations, as well as persistent grassroots engagement by fire service leaders throughout the country. We strongly urge the House to approve the Senate bill as soon as they return from the August Congressional recess.”

On July 12th, the House Science, Technology and Space Committee’s Subcommittee on Research and Technology conducted a hearing on reauthorizing the AFG, SAFER and FP&S grant programs. Unfortunately, the House adjourned for a five-week district work period before the subcommittee could take action on any legislation. The House is scheduled to return on September 5th.

Amarillo Fire Department Awarded Engine for Wildfires, Other Statewide Emergencies

Texas Panhandle residents may be responsible for preventing wildfires, but the Amarillo Fire Department now has one of the best tools in the state to fight them when needed.

The department unveiled its newest piece of equipment to the public Wednesday afternoon — with the help of one Smokey the Bear — a Type III fire engine that can help combat fires in grassy areas locally and can assist with other disasters around the state.

AFD was awarded the engine last month through the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System and the Texas A&M Forest Service. After all the needed equipment for the truck was added, the truck is valued at approximately $300,000, according to AFD officials.

Venice Fire Station in Desperate Need of Repairs, but Money in Short Supply

VENICE, FL (WWSB) - The City of Venice's Fire Department has a building problem. Fire Station One has been falling apart for years, but there has been no money to fix it. Each time we go to the station, it seems there is another problem waiting to be fixed.

A hole in the roof is the prime example of the problems at Fire Station One. It was there a few years ago when we first visited, and it was there a couple weeks ago when we last visited.

"A big question is, how much money do we put in this place before we say enough is enough?" said one frustrated citizen.

That's the big question on everyone's mind – when is enough, enough? While city leaders attempt to come up with an answer, the firefighters and paramedics work around the issues.

Part of those problems, says Venice City Councilman Bob Daniels, could come from a faulty A/C system.

"It's got mold, the A/C units are pretty well shot, the air quality is bad inside, if you look in the back there are metal doors that are rusted," he says.

In fact, those doors aren't doors at all anymore. They're all just casually leaning against the department's storage building, not connected to anything.

Daniels has been an advocate for rebuilding the station for some time. It's hard to find anyone who disagrees, but even harder still to find is the money to do the rebuilding.
