Fire Dept. Purchases Ladder Truck

The Waynesboro Volunteer Fire Department signed a contract to purchase a new aerial truck earlier this week. Fire officials will be going through Pierce Manufacturing for a truck that will cost $903,000. The 105-foot Pierce Arrow XT is expected to be delivered midway through 2018 and will be housed at the Potomac Street fire station.

The fire department has been in the planning stages for more than a year, forming a capital replacement committee to review proposals and pricing from multiple manufacturers.

Second-Grader with Longtime Medical Issues Gets Ride Home from School in Firetruck

Joey Carlson had a huge surprise waiting for him when he got out of school Thursday afternoon. The 8-year-old Central Heights Elementary second-grader walked out the door with his classmates and his eyes widened when he saw a fire truck parked at the curb. "You want to go for a ride?"

"The treat was arranged for the boy who has dealt with longtime medical problems that have left him wearing a tracheal tube and required frequent trips to Children’s Hospital Colorado.

"His mom, Jen Carlson, and grandmother, Kathy Carlson, both took photos as Joey walked up to the big rig, the other second-graders and their teachers looking on. Joey climbed into the rig, with a hand from Ben Adelman, fire chief for the Billings refinery."

FGFD Gets MPAT, Replaces Engine No. 3

Fairfield Glade Fire Chief Matt Dillman presented an update on the Fairfield Glade Fire Department (FGFD) at the Fairfield Glade Community Club (FGCC) board meeting Feb. 23. FGFD's current Insurance Services Office (ISO) Fire Suppression Rate is a 3.3. "There's been a lot of changes at the fire department," said Dillman.
"A Mini Pumper Attack Truck (MPAT) has been purchased and was getting some repair work done to it in Knoxville, TN. The MPAT was a 2005 Ford F550 and will apply towards the FGFD's ISO rating."

Anonymous Donor Gives $1,000 for Lackawanna Firefighting Gear

It's not every day a fire chief receives a $1,000 donation in the mail. But Lackawanna's Ralph Galanti recently did. "It came from a private citizen who, after reading an article in The Buffalo News, wanted to donate money to help purchase safety equipment for the firefighters," Galanti told City Council members at Monday night's meeting.
"This donation, from a person who wished to remain anonymous, came as a direct result of a plea made earlier this year by Lackawanna firefighters who said their worn, tattered breathing gear compromised their safety at fire scenes."
