New Bedford (MA) Accelerates Purchase of Fire Trucks to Lock in Lower Prices

It has been requested that the New Bedford (MA) City Council pay for purchasing and equipping two pumper trucks for the New Bedford Fire Department. The trucks would allow the city to retire older trucks in the fleet, the city said in a press release.

The acquisition of new trucks at a cost of $1,705,504 was already planned as a part of the City’s Capital Improvement Plan, but the acceleration of the truck purchases to the current fiscal year (FY23) will mitigate anticipated inflation-related cost increases by the manufacturer, the report said. The city will still take delivery of the new vehicles in FY2024 and FY2026 as previously planned.

CO Firefighter Charged with Careless Driving After Woman Died in Brush Truck Collision

Nick Sullivan – The Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colo.)

Nov. 11—A Colorado Springs firefighter has been charged with careless driving resulting in death after reportedly running over a woman at Dorchester Park last month, police announced in a press release Friday.

The firefighter, Wesley Cosgrove, drove over victim Margaret Miller while responding to a fire.

Fire crews were dispatched on Oct. 16 to Dorchester Park, where a man was reportedly attempting to start a fire. They found a fire on a tree stump off the main road. Crews called in a brush truck for assistance, since the fire truck was too big to take off the road.

Cosgrove, the brush truck driver, was unable to enter the park from the old parking lot, which was blocked off. He instead took a dirt path.

“Where the worn dirt path and grassy area meet, there was debris consisting of blankets and other items on the ground,” the release states. “The brush truck attempted to turn west in this area. As the brush truck made the turn, it struck the victim, Margaret Miller, who was under the items on the ground.”

CSFD personnel attempted lifesaving efforts, but Miller died on scene from her injuries. Colorado Springs police also reported to the scene.

Cosgrove is charged with careless driving resulting in death, a traffic misdemeanor. The investigation is ongoing.

TN Man Charged with Torching Motel, Trying to Steal Fire Truck

A man in Nashville was arrested Thursday after setting fire to a motel and then trying to steal a fire truck responding to the fire, police say.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday at a motel near Interstate 40 on Priest Drive. Firefighters and police were called to motel by guests who said a man had set fire to a mattress in his room and was unruly, WKRN reports.

One guest had to enter into the fire room and drag the mattress outside. Meanwhile, the suspect, Michael Morris, got into a responding fire truck and had to be removed by firefighters, police said.

Morris then stole a van and lead police on a short chase, police said. Morris was treated at Vanderbilt University Hospital for burns, abrasions and smoke inhalation. He faces charges including aggravated arson, burglary, and theft of a vehicle.

No one else was injured in the incident.
