Florida County Buying Two More New Ambulance Chassis

Jackson County Commissioner Chuck Lockey on Tuesday committed $50,000 from his individual discretionary fund to purchase two new chassis upon which two of the county's ambulance boxes will be mounted. This will allow the county to retire two units that have logged more than 200,000 miles, with aging engines that are worn beyond the point of feasibility to repair.

Jackson County Fire Rescue Chief Scott Birge said that action and a previous decision by the board were critical moves in the right direction. Of the county’s five ambulances in service, three have engines that have run more than 200,000 miles and the next-youngest has 112,000 miles. Birge said remounting the existing ambulance boxes atop new chassis will hopefully help the county start to “work our way out of an aging fleet and toward a more pro-proactive replacement program.”

Earlier, the board had approved the use of insurance money gained from a wrecked ambulance to replace a chassis and remount a box, where treatment occurs, and to replace another chassis as well from general funds. Those two are on order and together cost $52,000. Anticipating that the upcoming chassis purchases could slightly exceed the amount Lockey committed, Commissioner Eric Hill said he would take any excess out of his discretionary fund to finish the purchase if necessary.

Lockey made the decision to refresh the two additional units during a special 4 p.m. meeting prior to the board’s regular last-of-the-month session at 6 p.m.

In that special session of the board, commissioners also voted to request quotes on the purchase of several pieces of road equipment. Bids will be sought for one each of the following: A motor grader, excavator, backhoe and front-end loader.

North County (AZ) Fire Sees Red with New Engine

The Type 3 engine was purchased because of the area it will be used in. "Sometimes there's some bad roads and this has got a high clearance," said Director Smitty Smith. The engine holds 5,000 gallons of water and will also be available for use in wildland fires.

A brand new four-wheel drive Type 3 fire engine with a high clearance was on display Thursday at the North County Fire & Medical District in Sun City West.

Fire personnel and members of the board circled the shiny red engine that will be housed out of Station 104 which is located in the northern part of the fire district where there are rougher roads and undeveloped land with the potential for brush fires.

The Type 3 engine was purchased because of the area it will be used in.

“Sometimes there’s some bad roads and this has got a high clearance,” said Director Smitty Smith.

The engine holds 5,000 gallons of water and will also be available for use in wildland fires.

“If the the state wants to rent apparatus from fire districts or departments for wildland fighting, a Type 3 engine is the one that is in biggest demand.” said Mr. Smith.
