AL Suspect Steals and Wrecks Fire Truck, and Ambulance

The Limestone County Sheriff charged a Meridianville man with stealing a fire truck, ambulance and another car – throwing an EMT to the ground in the process, according to a report published by WAAY 31 News.

The wild series of events started around 1 a.m. when a Athens-Limestone EMS crew spotted a vehicle that had been in an accident in the southbound lanes of US-31 near. That vehicle, they later learned, had been stolen.

Tyrek Dequavyious Hayes, 30, was the lone person inside the vehicle and the EMS crew stopped to assist. When they loaded Hayes into the ambulance, he jumped into the front of the ambulance fled the scene. One EMT was thrown from the rear of the vehicle when it left the scene, a second was trapped in the patient compartment.

Hayes didn’t make it far, crashing the ambulance nearly landing in Swan Creek. The sheriff’s department responded to the scene and began searching on foot.

However, Hayes managed to double back to the scene where he jumped in a Tanner Volunteer Fire Department truck and fled again.

With the sheriff in pursuit, Hayes again ran off the road, totaling the fire truck, WKRG reports.

That’s where deputies apprehended Hayes. He faces charges that include theft, kidnapping, and assault.
