Members of the Washington State Fire Training Academy (FTA) recently attended the kick-off meeting for our training water treatment upgrades. The FTA discussed the potential of running Recruit Academy 2019-03 and other training alongside the planned construction activities. Unfortunately, unforeseen equipment delivery lead times will delay the start of the project until September 9, 2019. This means that Recruit Academy 2019-03 along with other scheduled training will not be available for the remainder of the year. The construction timeline will require the system to be out of service for the majority of the work and therefore no alternative workarounds will be available.

SSB 5010, No Man's Land - Annexation Reminder

Fire agencies must start the process of annexing no-man's land areas by January 1, 2021.

You may find the bill information here for more information:

SB 5010 states: Under current law, fire protection agencies are not required to provide firefighting services to unprotected land, which is defined as improved property located outside the jurisdiction of a fire protection service agency. Property owners of unprotected lands are encouraged to form or annex into a fire protection jurisdiction or enter into a contract for firefighting services. If this does not occur and firefighting services are provided to unprotected land, the property owners must reimburse the agency initiating firefighting services on unprotected land for certain costs incurred.

First Trust. Then Ethos.

The challenges facing leaders today are bigger, more complex and coming faster than ever before, with the volume of decisions needing to be made feeling like they are growing exponentially.  In this environment, unleashing a committed effort from every team member is no longer ‘nice to have’, it’s mission critical.

Think of it as an hourglass, with every grain of sand being a challenge to address or a decision to be made.  If you as the leader have to consider each of them alone, you are the crimp in the middle.  At best, you are slowing performance, at worst, guaranteeing failure. The need to fully engage, grow and empower your culture has never been more important.  The question is how?

Washington State Fallen Firefighters Foundation

The first recorded Washington State Line of Duty Death of a firefighter was on March 9th, 1891 when Seattle Firefighter Herman Larson was killed in a training accident on a peer.  Since that time 234 Washington State Firefighters have died in the line of duty.  On June 5th, 1991 Seattle Firefighter Donald Perry was the first presumptive cancer death.  Now, every year we gather around the state to lay to rest a fellow firefighter who has paid the ultimate price for their dedication, courage, and bravery.   Once a year on the first Sunday of June in Olympia, the Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service honors these heroes by placing a memorial ribbon upon a pike pole where they hang as a memorial to their memory so that we will never forget.

Insurance and Recovery Help for Victims of Fires

Fire investigators recently reached out to my office regarding aggressive solicitors selling mitigation and repair services to confused and overwhelmed property owners immediately after a fire. Many Washingtonians aren’t aware that my office has staff dedicated to helping consumers resolve disputes with their insurance companies and answer questions about insurance.

In response to our conversations with fire investigators, we developed a handout for victims of house fires It covers how to start an insurance claim, how to avoid being the victim of a scam, and other pointers about what to do and what not to do. It looks great printed in black & white and may be helpful for the fire victims you interact with. There is more information for consumers, including how to start the claims process and what to do if you have trouble with your insurance company, on our website at
