Newest Braintree (MA) Fire Engine Honors Former Chief

Braintree’s newest fire engine will honor of one of its former fire chiefs, PatriotLedger.com reported.

The new E-One Typhoon Low Hosebed Pumper will bear the name of late Fire Chief Kenneth McHugh, the report said.

McHugh was a member of the department for four decades, serving as fire chief from 2007-09 as the town was making the transition from a selectmen/town meeting form of government to the present mayor and council system.

He was awarded the department’s “Firefighter of the Year” Award in 1983 and received the 1999 Massachusetts Firefighter Service Award. He died in July 2011 at the age of 60.

The new pumper will replace one that was purchased in 1998 and has sustained significant wear and tear over the years.

The town was able to expedite delivery of the new truck, which was originally scheduled for delivery in 2023. The town’s fiscal 2022 capital budget included $710,000 for the purchase of the new pumper, the report said.

Firefighters trained on the new pumper, which is designated as Engine 1, last week, according to the report. The truck is expected to go into service this month.
