Berlin (NH) Gets $620K Grant for New Fire Engine

The Berlin (NH) Fire Department has received a $620,000 Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) to replace a tired pumper, according to a report published by The Berlin Sun.

The department and the fire chief worked for three years to get the grant to replace the 1979 pumper currently in service in Berlin, the newspaper reported, noting that the 43-year-old apparatus has been out of service for extended periods of time and has required costly repairs to keep it in service.

Berlin is also seeking funds to replace a 1995 aerial, according to the paper, that also mentioned the newest piece of equipment is a 2006 engine.

Berlin got $167,952 two years ago from the federal grant program to replace breathing apparatus, according to the report.

Williamstown (MA) Considers New $20 Million, 27,000-Square-Foot Fire Station

Williamstown, MA will vote this fall on a $20 million bond package that would replace its 72-year-old fire station, BerkshireEagle.com reported Wednesday.

The new fire station would be about 27,500 square feet and provide sanitary space to get geared up, the report said. There would also be a separate space to shed the gear and clean it, and a shower to sanitize the firefighters before they change into street clothes at the end of their shift.

The rather large square footage might raise some eyebrows, but a fire official said the building is expected to last 50 years or more.

The new station would house administrative space, meeting room, training spaces, vehicle bays and plenty of storage. The new station would be built on a vacant parcel owned by the fire district on Main Street, bordered by Linear Park Drive on the east and Aubuchon Hardware to the west, the report said.

While the designs are still underway, the fire district is seeking grants and donations to help fund the project.

Once the funding is secured, construction would likely start in the spring of 2023, with completion expected in late 2024 or early 2025, the report said.
