Firefighters with the Mount Morris (IL) Fire Protection District raising $2 million to put toward a new fire station with a price tag of $4.5 million, according to a report published by Journal Standard.
According to the report, the current facility was built as a car dealership in 1924 and not designed for modern apparatus with only 9- and 10-foot door openings. In 2021, the department bought a new apparatus that had to be custom built to fit in to the station, the report added.
The new station be about 14,000 square feet with 16-foot ceilings and 14-foot bay doors, according to the report.
The firefighters are hoping to not use any taxpayer dollars to pay for the new station and are seeking local, state and federal grants to pay the difference between what is raised through donations and the total cost of the project, the report said, noting ground breaking might happen within the next 18 to 24 months.
