August 29: A day in history that forever changed Louisiana’s geography and residents’ lives in 2005, 2012, and 2021

August 29 will forever be a day that Louisiana residents will remember. Three hurricanes have made landfall on this day. Those three storms severely altered Louisiana's geography and lives, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said reflecting on the anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina, Isaac, and Ida. Most remember exactly where they were, what they were doing, and how it felt to ride out one or all of these hurricanes.

Deep Wood Fire west of Airway Heights in Spokane 90% contained, all evacuations lifted

VIDEO: The Deep Wood Fire is now 90 percent contained, and all evacuation orders have been lifted, according to an update from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). According to most recent estimates, the Deep Wood fire, reported just before 5 p.m. on Sunday evening, has covered 109 acres west of Airway Heights.

Weaver Ridge Fire in Stevens County almost contained

Crews are still working to contain the 3 acre wildfire off of Weaver Way in Stevens County. According to Stevens County Fire District 1 (SCFD1), the Weaver Ridge Fire has burned near 3 acres. The fire is almost under control with interior activity. Crews continue working on the scene on Tuesday. One outbuilding has been burned, and firefighters are still working determine what kind of outbuilding.

First responders in Yakima County say the current radio system they have isn't safe for them or the public

Sheriff Robert Udell has called a new radio system a major public safety need. Currently, police, firefighters and ambulances are currently all on different systems which makes it hard for them to communicate to each other, especially in an emergency situation. Udell says as it is now, if deputies are driving long distances, like Grandview to Naches, they have to change their radio frequency about four times to make sure they are in constant communication.

Seattle Fire Department logs record overtime during pandemic

Severe staffing shortages and the pandemic get the bulk of the blame for record overtime at the Seattle Fire Department last year. The nearly $38 million Seattle Fire shelled out last year was an approximately 50% jump from 2019 and the most ever in department history. A Seattle Times analysis found when ranked by the number of hours paid to work – the top 30 city employees were all firefighters.
