Camano Island Fire & Rescue celebrated two promotions and a new firefighter at the March 26 Board of Fire Commissioner’s meeting.
After Capt. Ryan Shaughnessy went to Tulalip’s District 15, CIFR needed a captain.
Fire Chief Michael Schick said the department took the opportunity to promote from among its qualified and capable members.

Capt. Jeanette Woldseth thought of herself as just a firefighter.
She didn’t want to be remembered as a female firefighter, even though she was the first in the state. She also didn’t want the attention or focus on her, even when cancer consumed her body.
Yet, it’s clear part of Capt. Woldseth’s legacy is that she paved the way for other women to not only join the firefighting ranks, but to succeed in the male-dominated profession.

Firefighters rescued a window washer dangling from a Tacoma building on Monday morning, said Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke.
The window washer was working at a building near the intersection of South 11th Street and Broadway Avenue when he suffered an equipment malfunction, Meinecke said.
The washer rappelled off of the roof of the building and a safety device reportedly engaged leaving him stranded.

A newborn puppy is back safe with his mom after falling down a heater vent at a home in Auburn.
Valley Regional Fire Authority (VRFA) responded to a call Sunday that a 3-day-old puppy had fallen down a vent and far out of reach. The engine crew from Station 32 arrived and crawled under the home. They removed a heat duct and found the tiny pup.

One person has been arrested in the investigation of two Monday morning fires in Yakima.
Crews with the Yakima Fire Department (YFD) went to a burning home at the 1300 block of Cherry Avenue, around 7:40 a.m., Monday to find flames at the back side of the building spreading to the inside of the house.
