Volunteers honored by Cowlitz-Skamania Fire District

Four new volunteers who signed up in 2017 were among the 27 volunteers honored at the annual Clark-Skamania Fire District 7 volunteer recognition dinner held March 17 at Pleasant View Community Church near Cougar. Caps, pins, jackets and certificates were presented to volunteers who have served the district as long as 31 years.

Firefighters douse blaze at chicken feed factory in Tacoma

Investigators are trying to figure out exactly what sparked an overnight fire at a chicken feed factory in Tacoma. The blaze broke out late Monday night at a building in a commercial area near the intersection of St. Paul Avenue and Portland Avenue East. Investigators say the fire appears to have started in some equipment at the scene.

The hoses are heavy at the new firefighter training academy in Snohomish County

Almost all of the recruits in Snohomish County’s first fire academy have suited up before. But for Chau Nguyen, 33, a former furniture delivery truck driver, it was the first time he’d put on the hefty fire-resistant gear, slung the red 5-inch hose line over his shoulder and unraveled it by hauling it across wet asphalt.

Fire in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood ruled arson

A fire at apartment building in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood Monday night was intentionally set, according to investigators. The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. on the mezzanine level of the building located at 404 E. Howell Street. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames. No one was injured, but the fire caused about $10,000 in damage.

Fire Ops 101: Train like a firefighter for a day in Richland

Extricating someone from a car. Breaking down a door. Performing CPR. Those are just some of the tasks that firefighters have to be prepared for, beyond just fighting fires. People from all over the state of Washington got the chance on Friday to spend a day as a firefighter experiencing all the different scenarios these men and women have to be prepared for.
