The Fayetteville Fire Department has been looking to replace its 2006 engine. There was much discussion on whether to replace the apparatus with another engine or a ladder. At the time, Fayetteville Fire Department’s apparatus consisted of two 2006 Sutphen pumpers, a 1981 Sutphen tower, three tankers, a brush truck, and a small rescue unit.
The tower ladder was starting to show its age and had started to have many mechanical issues. Because of this, the tower was rarely used. Tower 85 had fulfilled its purpose over the years; however, members decided it may be time to replace both the engine and tower with a smaller, more efficient ladder truck. Fayetteville is a small, rural community with narrow roads and driveways. The first thought was to start looking for a 75-foot quint, allowing for a sharper turning radius than the larger Tower 85.
While talking to manufactures about 75-foot quints, Fayetteville stumbled upon a demo single-rear-axle 107-foot Pierce Enforcer ascendant ladder. Atlantic Emergency Solutions is the Pierce dealership in the area and stated because of the “demo” status the department would save more than $400,000 of what that exact truck would cost if ordered today.
When Pierce manufactures a “demo” truck, it takes the most popular options for that particular apparatus. So, purchasing a demo from Pierce does not mean you are getting a basic model. Another advantage to purchasing this demo is the quick delivery time. Currently some manufactures are up to 36 months before delivery. Fayetteville was able to have its new ladder in-station in less than two months.
