A local first responder is warning about a new drug, mostly seen combined with fentanyl, that is contributing to a dangerous trend in opioid-related overdoses in the Worcester area.
Brian Rettger, who works for Worcester Emergency Medical Services at UMass Memorial Healthcare, told Boston.com he’s seen a “significant spike” in opioid-related overdoses from late July into August around Worcester.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Lacey Fire District 3 chose to pull a commercial dumpster fully engulfed in flames to save a nearby building from damage in Lacey.
It all started around 2:43 a.m. when a Lacey Fire crew on a ladder truck was returning from an assistance call and the lieutenant overheard a call about a dumpster fire on Sleater Kinney Road.

The town of Malden had a bit of a scare over the weekend when a wildfire started nearby, resurfacing difficult memories from the devastating 2020 Babb Road Fire.
The 50 to 60-acre fire broke out on the evening of August 10, just two miles north of Malden near Wells Road and Pine City-Malden Road.
Fortunately, firefighters were able to knock the flames down quickly.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, about 25 lightning-caused fires burned about 40 acres in what is now called the Kachess Complex Fire northwest of Cle Elum.
Of the 25 fires, the Stave Creek Fire, the Thomas Fire and the Waptus Fire burned a majority of the 40 acres. The Stave Creek Fire is about 20 to 25 acres in size and fully uncontained.
