The Spokane Fire Department responded to a fire on South Freya Street Sunday morning. A call from the American Medical Response unit reported smoke coming from a house on the 400 block of South Freya Street, where a fire alarm was toned out. When the crew arrived, smoke was coming from the back of the structure and was later classified as a working fire.

Newport News plans to build fire stations in three different sections of the city in an effort to improve response times, with the first facility coming to the northern part of the city for a bit over $5 million, reports Yahoo.

City council voted Tuesday to appropriate more than $5.3 million to build a new Station 11 at the intersection of Turnberry and McManus boulevards, the report notes.

Rescue 2 and Technical Rescue 10, assigned to the north side, have been working out of a temporary station on leased property at the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport since 2008, with the lease about to end. The building has seen numerous maintenance problems to boot, the report says.

The second planned station would serve the Menchville area, with its funding beginning with the 2024 budget.

Also, the city is looking to set aside funds for a new Station 8 in the central district, replacing a facility that was built in 1958, the report says. Newport News is ready to begin setting aside funding for the $8.6 million project via its 2025 budget, the report says.

Lino Lakes fire officials say they’re fortunate to have found a used apparatus to replace Aerial 11, which was taken out of service due to a structural issue, reports northmetrotv.com. City council recently approved buying a replacement but only as a temporary solution.

Aerial 11’s body, engine, and transmission are still fine, but it’s corrosion on the frame that’s the problem, according to the report. Officials say the apparatus is beyond repair, and crews have begun removing reusable parts.

The department then needed a replacement, and supply-chain issues were only delaying any possible delivery dates to two or three years.

The department found a 2004 model in WI for about $182,000, the report says. However, the apparatus isn’t everything the deaprtment needs, and the department is still using two aging smaller trucks.

The plan, according to the report, is to put down a specification for two new water tender pumpers and eventually replace the 2004 truck. The aim is to make those changes in the next few years.

Braintree town council has approved an additional $7 million of renovations for the 91-year-old fire headquarters, reports patriotledger.com, bringing the total available to $11.5 million.

The funds are part of Mayor Charles Kokoros’ $21.6 million capital budget plan, for which there is now a comprehensive plan, the report says.

The work includes a two-story addition, with larger dorm space for firefighters, a new restroom and shower facilities, a decon area, a fitness center, a new kitchen, and a training area.

Officials say there are still unknowns—asbestos, possible lead contamination, according to the report—that could inflate the final cost, but they all agree that the work is necessary for the outdated facility.

Braintree facilities officials have been renovating the Braintree Historical Society’s Gallivan House on Washington Street for use as a temporary facility while the work is performed, which will save the town upward of $500,000, the report says.

The capital plan also includes $710,000 for a new fire engine. Money for the projects will come from borrowing, the report notes.
