State overseers of the city have asked a a Superior Court judge to reconsider his shutdown of a move to lay off 50 city firefighters, saying the city can’t afford their salaries.
The state filed its motion last week, asking Judge Julio Mendez to reconsider his late August ruling preventing the layoffs.

Don Oliver was just 2 years old when he had his first encounter with firefighters, but it was a pairing that lasted a lifetime.
It all started when Oliver’s mother had the toddler stand near the Christmas tree for a New Year’s Eve photograph in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. Oliver said he decided to imitate his dad by flicking one of the bulbs on the tree while his mother changed the film.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said Friday she was “shocked” at another round of allegations of sex in a city firehouse because the issue was “very clearly addressed” earlier this year.
Months after claims of sexual misconduct, city officials are investigating allegations that a firefighter violated department policy in August by having sex at a fire station.

The city of Manistee Fire Department is the oldest operating firehouse in the state of Michigan.
Firefighters and city officials have now applied to the Guinness World
They hope to get recognized as the ‘Oldest Continuously Manned Fire Station' in the world.

Former Canandaigua Fire Chief Mark Marentette has filed a complaint against the City of Canandaigua, saying his constitutional right to a fair hearing was violated.
The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages that include compensation for the loss of reputation and back and future pay. Marentette, who was terminated from his position in April, is also seeking reinstatement as Fire Chief.
