Klickitat County EMS District grant request for equipment turned down

It was a good news, bad news kind of meeting for Klickitat County Emergency Medical Services District No. 1’s board of directors. On Feb. 23, the directors learned that the EMS District’s grant application to a federal agency for funding to pay for equipment replacements and one new advanced life support ambulance had been turned down.

Plans underway for Monte High School fire cadet program

Montesano High School may soon have a number of fire cadets walking the halls. The Montesano Fire Department has partnered with the high school to offer a fire cadet program set to begin at the start of the next school year. “It’s an idea I had back in 2015. We started talks with the school but couldn’t get it all together in time for this school year,” Montesano Fire Chief Corey Rux said.

One dead after house fire east of Yakima

One person is dead and another is hospitalized after a fire at a home off Birchfield Road this morning. An investigation has begun, but most details remain scant this morning. The fire was reported at 5:54 a.m. at 1603 Birchfield Road east of Yakima. Except for a black smoke stain beneath the eves, there was little visible evidence of a fire from outside the one-story home.

Vacant house fire in Spokane Valley ruled suspicious

Wednesday evening Spokane Valley firefighters responded to a reported house fire a 7222 E. Boone Ave. Crews arrived at a vacant single story house just after 5 p.m. and found smoke coming from the eaves of the house. Firefighters called for more units to respond and quickly extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.

Former Thirtymile Fire crew chief sentenced in DUI crash

A former U.S. Forest Service manager who fled from a DUI accident last summer was sentenced Wednesday to 45 days in jail. Ellreese N. Daniels, 56, of East Wenatchee pleaded to a felony charge of hit and run and a count of driving under the influence in the July 8 wreck, which injured a Snohomish County motorist and his passenger, both 20.
