The Crescent-Villa Fire Authority Wednesday held a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the new Crescent Springs-Villa Hills Fire Department station.

The total cost of the project is not to exceed $8,500,000, according to city council.

The facility will be located at 777 Overlook Drive on four acres behind its predecessor, which will be razed when the new building is finished.

Huntington (WV) Set to Build Two New Stations

The city of Huntington has plans to build two new fire stations, reports wowktv.com.

The two new facilities will be replacements, with the first set to be built on 20th Street near Marshall University, while the other will be in Westmoreland on Piedmont Road, the report says. Officials say the current digs are not safe nor efficient.

Construction on the 20th Street station, budgeted for $4.9 million, will begin this summer. Officials hope to have it up and running at the beginning of next year.

FA reported last May that the city had purchased land for the Westmoreland facility. Officials said then that the design phase hadn’t yet begun and estimated that construction wouldn’t start for another year or two.

Ely (MN) Fire Department Getting Two Apparatus for $470k

The Ely Fire Department will soon have two more fire trucks in its fleet, as city council recently approved the purchase of an E-ONE ladder and engine from a Bloomsburg (PA) department for around $470,000, reports timberjay.com.

Fire officials searched online for replacements for just the department’s 1983 Seagrave ladder, but when their 1979 American LaFrance aerial failed its pump test this year, they had no choice as the company is out of business and replacement parts are difficult to find.

Fortuitously, the Bloomsburg department also had an engine for sale. Ely’s budget committee authorized a bid of $467,485 and that was that, the report notes.

In addition to more capabilities, the new ladder has a 95-foot reach, whereas its predecessor’s is only 75 feet.

No decisions have been made with regards to the old equipment and apparatus.

Taking Delivery of Toyne Pumper, Pleasureville Fire Department Strengthens Apparatus Fleet

Pleasureville, KY (April 1, 2022) – A fully customized Toyne Pumper made the 700-mile journey from Toyne’s headquarters in Breda, Iowa, to the fire department of Pleasureville, Kentucky. Now stationed at its new home, the pumper is ready to take the call with the dedicated volunteer firefighters of this rural community.

The department has been serving the residents of Pleasureville, Kentucky, since 1959. In addition to tackling fires, the Pleasureville Fire Department (PFD) also acts on medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, rescue calls, and incidents involving hazardous materials. On average, the department responds to over 50 calls per year. Outside of their regular duties, PFD is a community partner for the WHAS Crusade for Children, raising money to better the lives of children with special needs. For a department that does so much for their community, expanding capabilities with a new pumper allows them to continue protecting life and property.

“Our experience working with Toyne was great, from the drawing stages all the way to the delivery,” said Fire Chief Matt Woods. “We were informed of the whole process, which allowed us to follow the build of the truck.”

Toyne stall-built the pumper body with bolted painted stainless steel. The main storage compartments on each side of the apparatus feature ROM roll-up doors for stowing gear and tools. The wheel wells have storage for up to eight SCBA bottles. Toyne also made custom under-step storage for additional space. There are rear slide-in compartments for ladders, pike poles, and hard suction hoses.

PFD’s pumper is equipped with a powerful Waterous CS pump, capable of moving water at 1,250 GPM. When needed, firefighters can utilize a Foam Pro 1600 Class-A foam system with a 25-gallon foam cell. Adding to the effectiveness on the scene are ten discharge and five intake points located throughout the apparatus. The pump panel is located on a central platform where firefighters can control everything from the pump pressure to the Akron Hi Riser monitor. Water is stored in a 1,000-gallon UPF tank.

Chief Woods continued, “The quality is second to none, from each bolt to the striping. The attention to detail is awesome, and we look forward to working with Toyne for many years to come.”

The pumper body is mounted on a Freightliner M2 106 four-door chassis. The cab has seating for up to five Pleasureville firefighters. Utilizing the interior cab and chassis space, PFD volunteers have in-cab flashlight mounts and a passenger step storage compartment. With a 360-horsepower Cummins ISL9 engine and Allison 3000 EVS transmission, this apparatus can react swiftly to a scene.

“It was a true honor to work with the Pleasureville Fire Department to design and build their first Toyne Pumper,” said aid Bill Bird, Toyne Product Support Coordinator. “This apparatus is customized to be an asset on the scene, and we are excited to see how this pumper allows the department to better serve their community.”

The pumper was sold to PFD by authorized Toyne Dealer, High Tech Rescue. This dealer serves departments throughout Kentucky.
