‘No family should have to go through what we went through,’ Oklahoma father who lost son in KIA fire reacts to new recall

A Calvin man who lost his son due to a KIA Soul fire back in 2019 contacted KFOR wanting to once again share the family’s tragic story after a new KIA recall. “We’ve had days that are okay, and we’ve had days that have not been very good,” Robert Carlton told News 4. It’s been almost two years since Robert and Becky Carlton lost their son, Jordan.

After 175 years, a reflection on natural disasters at the University of Iowa

Across the University of Iowa’s 175-year history, the campus community has experienced a wide-range of disasters including tornadoes, flooding, and fires. The most impactful events include the 2008 flood and fires at South Hall, the old library building, and the Old Capitol Building. The 2008 flood inflicted $750 million in damage to 22 campus buildings including the old Hancher Auditorium building, which was destroyed in 2013, and the Art Building, which has since been decommissioned.

30+ firefighters battle down roof fire at Vancouver Red Lion

Plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away after the roof of the historic Red Lion Hotel in Vancouver caught fire on Tuesday. Vancouver Fire Department says more than 30 firefighters and several fire engines from CCDF 6 all responded to the fire around 2:30 p.m. As crews were arriving, they saw a “significant amount” of dark smoke wafting around the building’s sign.

Newman Lake Fire and Rescue battles 'intense flames' in bitter-cold temperatures

Newman Lake Fire and Rescue (NLFR) battled "intense" flames near Lincoln Road Tuesday morning. Despite efforts, by multiple responding agencies, an airplane hangar was a total loss. Right now, the cause of the fire is under investigation. According to NLFR, the extremely cold conditions made an already challenging task tremendously difficult with valves and lines freezing, pumps not operating, quick forming ice and the cold sucking energy from firefighters.

Proposal in Tacoma to deploy mental health crisis team instead of police gets boost

Momentum in the city of Tacoma appears to be growing for an effort to create a mental health crisis response team that would respond to some emergency calls instead of police, an effort supporters say could help stem officer-involved shootings of people suffering from mental breaks. Community activists said Tuesday that they delivered 500 signatures to the members of the Tacoma City Council that support the idea of creating such a team.
