Dorchester County (SC) Fire Station 21 Closed for $3.3M Rebuild

Dorchester County Fire Station 21 on Ladson Road is now closed as construction begins on a $3.3 million remodeling project, reports live5news.com.

The project will see the station razed and rebuilt so it faces the road. The new facility will have four bays, office space, living quarters, a weight room, a decon room, and at least six bunkrooms, the report says.

The project is currently $300,000 over its original budget, and construction is expected to be completed next year, according to the report.

Department officials say they moved the fire trucks to Station 22, about four miles away, while EMS services went to a Summerville station one mile away. While this has some residents concerned, officials insist that there will not be a disruption in service.

Using Multiple Primers to Establish Your Static Water Supply

By Bill Adkins

When building a fire apparatus with front or rear intakes, most manufacturers don’t take into consideration whether the department using it may need to draft from those intakes. If you have ever tried pulling a draft from the front or rear intake with an empty water tank, then you know how difficult that may be. When using front or rear intakes, the primer at the pump housing must move tremendous amounts of air before reaching the water source. What can we request on our build sheet to accommodate such situations? One fix is adding a second primer to those long intakes.

Pumps are tested when built (and annually) to ensure all components are in working order and to verify the pump capabilities. During this test they are almost always tested using the side intakes. This has significantly less cubic feet of air than using the front or rear intakes. Because of this, additional primers are not installed unless requested from the buyer.

Massive fire led to many changes in turn-of-the-century Oklahoma city

Most of the early day buildings around the Enid downtown square in 1901 were built of southern hard pine. A few painted walls and some brick walls were beginning to be used. Wooden sidewalks were the standard. According to the Enid Fire Department history, the Enid City Council on Dec. 28, 1893, approved the appointment of a fire warden and assistant fire marshal, plus each business around the downtown square would be required to keep a barrel of water for protection against fire and six fire hand grenades (glass spheres containing carbon tetrachloride) to help put out any fires that occurred.
