On the morning of January 6, 2021, Christopher Holmes was starting out his second day as a battalion chief for DC Fire and EMS. "I'd just recently been promoted," said Holmes, who's been with the department for more than 20 years. But right now, self-tests are in short supply in many parts of the country. The Biden administration is pledging to distribute 500 million rapid tests "within weeks," White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said Wednesday, but few other details have been announced.

Vancouver firefighters rescued a woman from a burning house early Sunday morning in central Vancouver. Seven units from the Vancouver Fire Department were dispatched at 3:53 a.m. to the 4000 block of East 18th Street after a passerby called 911 to report seeing smoke and fire coming from the front of a house, according to a department news release.
