Virginia firefighter turned pastor now serves others on the football field

Jason Elmore has walked several paths in life, none of which he ever planned. For some people, Elmore was the face of the Chesterfield Fire Department. with whom he served for 20 years. He originally wanted to join the police department, but a fateful quirk of the regulations changed his course. "Once I became 18 years old, I realized I couldn't be a police officer until I was 21," Elmore said.

Deadly crowd surges have happened for decades; Safety standards exist, but they’re not required nationwide

Paul Wertheimer has spent four decades trying to help prevent deadly crowd surges since a disaster at a concert by The Who changed his life. Eleven young people, ages 15 to 27, died in a crowd crush at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Coliseum in 1979. “There were piles of shoes and clothing,” said Wertheimer, who responded to the scene as the city’s public information officer.

Explosion at homeless encampment under West Seattle Bridge starts large fire

An explosion at a homeless encampment under the West Seattle Bridge ignited a large fire late Wednesday night. Our KOMO News crew was at the scene when an explosion near the Chelan Cafe started the fire. Authorities said it appears no one was at the encampment at the time of the explosion. Seattle Fire says the explosion was caused by four to five propane tanks, and they are working to determine what caused the tanks to explode.

Tacoma firefighters take down abandoned house fire

Tacoma firefighters were on the scene of a huge house fire early Thursday morning. The fire started at a two-story abandoned home an adjacent RV in the 500 block of 56th Ave. E. There were also down wires at the front corner of the house. The fire marshal arrived on the scene and will investigate the cause of the fire in this abandoned house.

Two boys stuck in storm drain rescued by emergency crews in Federal Way

Intense downpours led to a life-and-death situation for two children Thursday night before police arrived to save the youngsters and make a dramatic rescue. The boys, one of who is 11 years old and the other who is 10, were playing in a storm pond near the Kitts Corner apartment complex on S 336th Street when they got sucked into a drain pipe and dragged off by the current.
