Firefighters pulling double duty at Stevens County Fire Dist. #1

Mariann Crooks has already had a busy summer - this is her 2nd summer serving as a volunteer firefighter for Fire District 1. "I have 2 kids still at home," she said. "They run downstairs to see if I'm still there, because I usually get called out at night." And Mariann, like firefighters across the state, know there's no time to relax due to fires within their districts, and wildfires.

Brush fires cause an estimated $780K to 3 Vancouver homes

Two fires that started in vegetation and then spread to three nearby homes on Wednesday caused a total estimated damage of $780,000, according to the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office. The two separate fires were reported within about an hour and a half of each other, stretching firefighting resources thin as crews worked to quell one blaze before being called to the second.

Bellingham firefighters training on new $1M fire boat

The city’s new fire boat, the Salish Star, has arrived in town and could be in service as soon as this fall. Over the past few weeks, people already may have noticed crews taking the new boat out on Bellingham Bay for training, spraying thousands of gallons of water from two fire pumps. About 3,000 gallons of water per minute, to be exact.

Brush fire prompts evacuations in Bonney Lake

Around 20 homes were evacuated after a brush fire swept through the Panorama Heights neighborhood in Bonney Lake Wednesday evening. Firefighters conducted door-to-door evacuation alerts while fire crews from East Pierce, Central Pierce and Orting Valley fire departments battled the swift-moving fire, which spread to trees and created thick smoke in the area.

Follow Up: Blast at Newport aerospace plant causes major damage, 5 injuries

An explosion rocked an aerospace plant in northeast Washington, toppling large pieces of machinery, lifting an entire floor off its foundation and injuring five people, authorities said Wednesday. The sheer power of the blast Tuesday night and the shrapnel it created caused the majority of the damage, and little to no fire ignited at Zodiac Aerospace in the small town of Newport, said Spokane Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer, who responded to the scene.
