An explosion ripped through an aerospace company in Newport Tuesday night, shattering glass and causing a section of the roof to collapse. The blast, which occurred shortly before 9 p.m., sent five people to the hospital. At least one person was taken by helicopter to Spokane. “People heard the explosion from miles away,” said Grant Sirevog, the undersheriff for Pend Oreille County.

An active shooter incident is something most of us don't want to think about, but area first responders – like Spokane firefighters – need to be prepared for, so they're conducting training exercises to prepare for that worst case scenario. Personal fireworks are believed to have caused $824,500 in property damage across Clark County during this month's Fourth of July festivities. Authorities also handed out $11,750 in fines to people for shooting off fireworks outside of allowed times. Of the 46 citations the Vancouver Fire Marshal issued, only one was for an illegal firework, Lead Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Drone said Monday.

The Mount Adams Complex of small fires in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest was reported to be 83 percent contained this morning. The Spiral Fire, which burned an acre of timber in the Big Lava Bed north of Willard, has been put out. Crews are mopping up hotspots on the 63-acre Riley Fire, one of the small fires of the Mount Adams Complex on the west side of Mount Adams Wilderness.
