Washington firefighters blast pay raises given to managers

When it comes to fighting fires, the people on the front lines take all the risk. But the state's largest union representing wild land firefighters says all the rewards are going to managers. "It's very sad. The inequitable treatment is disappointing," said Washington Public Employees Association President Kent Stanford.

One dead in 2-car crash in Tacoma

One person was killed in a two-car crash in Tacoma Friday morning. Tacoma fire said the head-on crash occurred at 19th Avenue and M Street. A Ford truck and a car collided. The Ford was put on a flatbed truck to be taken from the scene. KIRO 7 News video shows that it appears that firefighters had to cut the roof off the car to free its driver.

Crews make progress on Little Spokane Fire

Firefighters have made some progress knocking down the Little Spokane Fire in Riverside State Park, which is 20 percent contained following a buildup of personnel and equipment on scene. Two additional 20-person firefighting crews were assigned to the fire yesterday, for a total of seven. They’ve built a line around the entire perimeter of the fire, which has burned about 176 acres since starting Monday.

Update: Man arrested after trash burns out of control, kills 79-year-old in Thurston County

Police arrested a man on a felony warrant Friday following a deadly house fire sparked from a trash burn. According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, fire crews were called to a report of two homes on fire Wednesday morning in the 3200 block of 78th Street SE. Crews arrived on the scene and worked to put out the fires, which were aided by debris, ammunition and propane tanks scattered around the homes.

Cat rescued by firefighters in Hazel Dell

A kitten was rescued by firefighters in Hazel Dell, Washington -- from the exhaust system of a motor home. Owners of the RV heard a cat calling out for a couple of days, but weren’t able to get it out on their own. They called Clark County fire officials. Firefighters went to their home and rescued the kitten.
