Coral Springs (FL) has hired Burke Construction Group of Doral as builder for the $4.9 million Station 64 reconstruction project, reports tapinto.net.

To serve the city’s southeast side, Station 64 will be built just up the road from the existing station on Ramblewood Dr.

The project is part of the $28 million in bond issues the city approved last year for public improvement, according to the report.

The existing station was built in the 1970s and can’t house emergency personnel or even modern apparatus, officials say. The new facility will look similar to Stations 43 and 95.

Plans call for the existing Station 64 to be turned into a local senior center.

Following the unveiling of the Greenfield (MA) Fire Department’s new station design, residents and even some committee officials have expressed a desire for a more traditional Greenfield look for the facility, reports therecorder.com.

One concern is the design of the entrance, which some say is unceremonious, according to the report. More trepidation lies with the station having two signs. Some comments from firefighters included adding another drive-thru bay in the rear of the building and potentially adding more dorm rooms.

The committee included a few Monday and Thursday meetings throughout the month to discuss the plans, the report says. The full meetings schedule can be found here.

Department officials say they will use the temporary station on Hope Street for about two years before the new facility is ready. The former Main Street fire station will be demolished to make way for a library.

An Omaha (NE) Fire Department apparatus was responding to a medical call Sunday morning in east Omaha when it was struck by another vehicle, which rendered it inoperable, reports wowt.com.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. near 10th and Martha streets, and fire officials say the vehicle hit the truck while attempting to pass a stopped SUV.

One person was extricated from a sedan and transported to a hospital, and the sedan’s driver was also taken to the hospital, according to the report.

The crash is under investigation.

The Belmont (OH) Village Council recently authorized the purchase of a new $539,000 fire engine, reports timesleaderonline.com, using bonds while at the same time keeping its eyes peeled for grants.

The department’s current 1991 engine is 10 years beyond its recommended service time, and the department has already scouted a demo model of the apparatus, according to the report.

Officials say the village is putting down a $100,000 payment for the engine and financing the rest—with the city already sitting on a 2.25% financing offer—with bi-annual payments that should have it paid off in five years.

The apparatus is currently being built and should be ready for action in December. The report says it will be used for service at the Daytona 500 in February, then receive a final inspection, and be delivered to the department in March.

The Reading (PA) Fire Department recently broke ground on a new $9 million station, reports Yahoo.

The new facility—to be built on the northeast corner of Ninth and Marion streets—will be more than three times the size of its predecessor, which was built in 1887 and lacks space, safety features, and many modern amenities, the report says.

The old station will be demolished and rebuilt into a playground. Plans for the new station were previously shelved multiple times over location disputes.
