The stretch of the Columbia River along Benton County’s southern border used to be a lonely place to get in trouble. Rescue crews had drive from the Tri-Cities, taking an hour to get into the water. For the last month though, firefighters and sheriff’s deputies quickly rescued several people from a sinking boat, helped a stranded boater and responded to an emergency beacon.

PHOTOS: Someone illegally shooting off fireworks early Tuesday morning has destroyed a Kent convenience store. Firefighters were called out to the 23800 block of 104th Avenue SE around 1:30 a.m. for the fire. Both Kent police and fire departments were there for the two-alarm fire. Puget Sound Fire said crews worked to extinguish the fire for a while and soon found out fireworks were the cause.

Firefighters continue to put in good work and have more of the Ford-Corkscrew Fire contained. Stevens County Fire District No.1 said on Monday night the wildfire was 56-percent contained and had 15,787 acres. Monday will be the last planned night for crews to be out. They will be working until midnight and then reassigned to the day shift.

Sources in fire departments across King County told KIRO 7 a solid 30% of on-duty firefighters, paramedics and EMTs are not vaccinated for COVID-19 now. And in some fire stations, they told us that number is close to 40%. Some firefighters told their unions they won’t get vaccinated to abide by Gov.
