COVID variants discovered in US reveal clues about virus' evolution

Scientists have identified seven new coronavirus variants that have emerged in the United States, according to a study awaiting peer review. All seven variants contained a similar mutation and were found to have emerged as early as July 2020. Scientists say it's not surprising that they're just now identifying new viral variants in the U.

More than 1,000 Spokane County first responders now fully vaccinated

More than 1,000 first responders across Spokane County are officially vaccinated. An interdisciplinary task force was tasked with vaccinating Spokane County's EMS professionals and, as of Friday, all who wished to be vaccinated have received their second dose. In total, 1,060 first responders completed the two-shot series and 5,290 total doses were administered at the clinic.

VIDEO: Trash burns in street after truck fire in Seattle

Thanks for the tip. A “car fire” callout in the 4000 block of SW Barton is actually a solid-waste truck fire, says our texter, and police are being dispatched for traffic control – the dispatcher described it as a “large trash fire in the roadway.’ Adding reader video sent by Eric Nordlund. As it shows, and as our crew reports, the truck had to dump trash in the street after the truck broke out – and that’s where the trash burned.

Woman burned in fire at Seattle homeless camp

One woman was taken to the hospital after fire broke out at a homeless encampment along Interstate 90 early Thursday. Firefighters and medics responded to the scene, along eastbound I-90 near Rainier Avenue South, at about 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of flames spreading through the camp. Crews doused the blaze and treated one woman at the scene for burn injuries described as "minor.

Commack (NY) Fire Apparatus Finds Second Home in TN

A fire truck that was formerly used by the Commack Fire Department was delivered in January to the Clear Fork Volunteer Fire Department in Rugby, Tennessee, reports Newsday.

The truck was valued at about $10,000, but was sold for $1,000 after the fire department learned the town had lost one of its few restaurants and a home in separate fires.

Long Island fire districts sell about 100 vehicles each year to departments elsewhere in the United States and even in South America.

A retired professional firefighter from New Hampshire who’d recently moved to Rugby helped find the Commack truck.
