According to a report from The Tribune, the Seymour (IN) Fire Department (SFD) announced it had received delivery of the latest truck in its fleet: a Pierce Arrow XT.

The 100-foot aerial ladder truck was purchased and built to replace the SFD’s current Ladder 1, which turns 24 years old this year. The $1.3 million rig is powered by a Cummins X12 500-horsepower engine and boasts a 2,000-gallon-per-minute pump and 300-gallon water tank, making it the largest capacity truck in the SFD’s fleet.

It can seat four members at a time and cuts setup time, from 90 seconds to 30, noted SFD Chief Brad Lucas.

The mid-mount aerial’s ladder base, where the operator stands to use it, is toward the middle of the truck behind the cab, rather than at the rear of the truck like the previous Ladder 1.

The design makes the new truck slightly shorter (10 feet, 8 inches tall) and more compact, allowing it to fit in SFD’s Station 1 bay.

The truck will be housed at Station 1 so it’s nearer to the downtown area and the hospital.

Lucas said even when the new station is built, Ladder 1 will remain at Station 1. The SFD will sell off it old truck, and Lucas said he doesn’t expect it to bring in more than $100,000.

The new truck also allows Seymour maintain an ISO rating of 3, which is outstanding, Lucas said.

The truck will feature a helmet decal decorated with a stars and stripes theme and the wording “Honoring America’s bravest 9-11-01, we will not forget you.”

According to a report from The Las Cruces Bulletin, Las Cruces, New Mexico, City Public Works Department Director David Sedillo gave an update on several city projects currently in the planning stages or under construction, one of those being the new Fire Station No. 3.

The Las Cruces Fire Department’s (LCFD’s) Fire Station No. 3 will cost $6.2 million to build and be adjacent to the existing Fire Station No. 3 at 390 N. Valley Drive.

Construction began on January 20 and should be completed this year. The existing Fire Station No. 3 was built in 1967 and is experiencing major structural problems. The station is the busiest single-unit station in Las Cruces and is now too small to add a second unit. It also lacks the capacity to address the growing population the station serves on the Las Cruces’s west side.

According to a report from The Herald-Dispatch, the Kenova (WV) Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) introduced the latest addition to its fleet last week: Engine 104—a 2000 model Pierce Quantum, which replaces a 40-year-old truck that the department has taken out of service.

KVFD Deputy Chief John Francis said the engine was found online. After the purchase was made, KVFD members went to Virginia to pick it up.

KVFD Chief Jamie Stoner said the department was actually looking for a newer ladder truck, but when they saw this Pierce, they had to take it. Stoner said the department was able to buy it for almost one-fifth of its asking price, saving the KVFD around $35,000.

The engine has 750-gallons water and 40-gallon foam tanks. The foam mixes with the water to help extinguish larger fires. Considering many older engines cannot hold foam, it was important for the department to find this rig.

Francis said the department is still looking to buy a newer ladder truck, which will hopefully happen in the coming months.
