Some members of the International Association of Fire Fighters want an independent testing for cancer-linked chemicals in their gear, reports The New York Times.

Delegates representing the union’s more than 300,000 members are expected to vote on the measure in the next few days.

In October, two dozen firefighters in California filed suit against 3M, Chemours, E.I. du Pont de Nemoursand other manufacturers. The firefighters claimed that the companies for decades knowingly made and sold firefighting equipment loaded with toxic chemicals.

Over the past three decades, cancer has emerged as the leading cause of death for firefighters across the county, making up 75 percent of active-duty firefighter deaths in 2019.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of land to expand a fire station, reports Patch.com.

The vote was unanimous to purchase the land for $104,000. With the purchase of the adjacent property, the county will be able to add living space on to the existing station.

Fire officials said the existing fire station was built by volunteers and never was intended to house career firefighters.

Police are searching for people who targeted a Memphis fire station and broke into 10 vehicles, reports WREG News 3.

In the last several months there have been incidents of burglaries at Memphis fire stations.
