Drone to the rescue: How Phoenix Fire is using technology to rescue hikers

VIDEO: Phoenix Fire Department crews completed their first weight-bearing drone rescue this week during a 13-hour overnight operation on Camelback Mountain, marking a new milestone for Valley first responders. The rescue involved using a drone to deliver life-saving supplies to a distressed hiker at the top of Camelback Mountain while crews worked on a plan to safely bring him down.

“What can we use this for and really, the sky and no pun intended, the sky is the limit,” said Phoenix Fire Capt. Mike Johnson. The drone carried a cellphone, food, water and a blanket to the stranded hiker during the rescue operation. “It allowed us to be able to communicate with him, let him know what our plan was, make sure if he was OK and if there were any other needs and allowed us to get a bird’s eye view of where he was,” Johnson said.

Fire Museum of Maryland’s Train Garden brings Baltimore area holiday tradition to families

VIDEO: The Fire Museum of Maryland’s Train Garden in Lutherville continues a Baltimore holiday tradition that dates back more than a century, capturing imaginations with its whimsical displays and deep roots in the area’s firefighting history.

“Train gardens were brought to America by German immigrants in the mid-1800s and it became a thing in the greater Baltimore area and train gardens became associated with firehouses,” said Amy Landsman, media relations director for the Fire Museum of Maryland.

“The firefighters had some free time. They would put together these big train gardens.” The Fire Museum on York Road in Lutherville has continued that tradition since the mid-1980s. What started as one small table has grown into an elaborate display where multiple trains wind through a miniature community featuring familiar landmarks including the Bromo Seltzer Tower, the Palace Theater and Bengie’s Drive-In.

Spokane County firefighters ensure safety at RV fire

District 4 firefighters responded to a shop fire Friday night. The response became more urgent when dispatchers told the crew a person was potentially trapped in an RV near the fire. Spokane County Fire District 4 posted about the fire response the following morning and said it worked together with Spokane District 9 firefighters during the response. District 4 said its engine arrived at the scene less than five minutes after the fire was reported.

Firefighters at the scene saw “heavy fire conditions” involving the shop and the RV, District 4 said. District 4 said firefighters worked “aggressively” to enter the RV and rescue the person, but they realized there was not a person inside after all. “Thankfully, no one was trapped, and it was later confirmed the individual was not at home at the time of the fire,” District 4 wrote. District 4 said the incident was a reminder for people to make sure heating sources are used properly and safely.

Auburn residents evacuated near Green River, city braces for more rain and flooding

PHOTOS/VIDEO: Mike Leaf paddled through some of the worst flooding he’s ever battled in his front yard in a canoe Sunday morning, after a week of heavy rainfall and back-to-back atmospheric rivers. He’s lived along the Green River in Auburn for 25 years and said he’s never dealt with such high floodwater. Leaf told KOMO News that water reached 14 inches in his garage and another 17 inches in their shop.

Thankfully, no water has entered his home. “We’re just fortunate that it didn’t go up another inch, inch and a half,” Leaf explained. “Then that would’ve been in the house, and we’d be in a hotel or something.”
