In a project for the Defense Department’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), computer scientists have turned to artificial intelligence and aerial imagery to construct a detailed damage assessment solution. The tool can be used remotely and automatically to determine the amount of damage to buildings and structures from a natural disaster or catastrophe.

PHOTOS: A former restaurant erupted in flames early Tuesday, sparking a response from multiple fire districts.
Crews rushed to the scene, in the 4500 block of "A" Street SE in Auburn, at about 6:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire in a commercial structure.
Smoke and flames were pouring from the building when the first firefighters arrived.

VIDEO: In August, when Jason Phillips came to Colorado to fight the Cameron Peak Fire, he didn’t expect to be here nearly four months later fighting the lingering effects of COVID-19.
Phillips, who lives in Washington state, arrived in Fort Collins on Aug. 10 after months of already fighting wildfires in different parts of the country.

2020 has been a turbulent year full of cancellations, but that’s not stopping firefighters in Yakima County from keeping one of their special holiday traditions in tact. Each year, the Selah Fire Department covers a fire truck with Christmas lights for the annual Lighted Parade. However, this year the parade was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
