Within a few months, teams of mental health workers and EMTs will be dispatched in some Alameda County cities to help people having a mental crisis or substance abuse problems. The pilot program, called the “Community Assessment Treatment and Transport Team,” or CATT, will roll out in Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward and Alameda sometime this summer.

Jan. 6, 2014: A four-story Howe Avenue building opposite the Shelton end of the Derby-Shelton Bridge burns and collapses, leaving five injured and several homeless.

PHOTO: A fiery crash on I-90 as left the freeway blocked for the second time Tuesday morning and a semitruck burning. The crash happened in the westbound lanes just east of SR 18, according to the WSDOT. Video from the scene showed huge flames coming from the wrecked semi. All westbound lanes are blocked at milepost 31 for the fire and crash investigation.

Awoman injured by a fire in her Longview apartment Wednesday night remained in critical condition on a ventilator and responsive to treatment as of Monday morning, Longview Fire Battalion Chief Troy Buzalsky said. Longview firefighters and insurance investigators have determined the fire started on a cooktop in the apartment's kitchen, Buzalsky said, but it's not yet clear what exactly caused the fire to start.
