VIDEO/PHOTOS: Cobb County firefighters have a new device to keep them safe. Fire officials say the StormStick will not only help them now, but possibly for the rest of their lives.
When firefighters respond to calls, they're not just battling the smoke and flames. "The amount of carcinogens that are in smoke – whether it be a residential or commercial fire – the numbers are through the roof now as opposed to what they were 30, 40 or 50 years ago before everything was made of plastic.

VIDEO: The war in Israel has prompted dozens of American volunteers to offer up their life-saving skills.
On Monday, CBS New York met Long Island-based firefighters who recently returned from volunteering their time and skills in the war zone.
Volunteer firefighter Schuyler Gordon is used to running toward danger to save lives.

PHOTOS: A 1946 vintage Reed City Fire Department truck has returned to its original home after several years.
During a meeting in September, the Reed City city council approved accepting the donation of the 1946 Chevrolet/John Bean fire truck back to the city.
Council member Dave Beldon told the board he had been in contact with the owner, Richard Palmer, for a couple of years and had discussed with him the possibility of the truck returning to Reed City.

Emergency crews responded to a large fire at an encampment next to Interstate 5 in Seattle Tuesday morning.
Video from a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) camera shows large flames and a plume of black smoke coming from a structure on top of a hill near the northbound I-5 on-ramp from South Dearborn Street.

Fire damaged a historic hangar early Tuesday at the former Tustin Air Base in Orange County.
The fire was reported at about 1:30 a.m. near Valencia Avenue and Armstrong Road, where flames were shooting through the roof of the towering wooden hangar. Parts of the roof fell to the ground, and firefighters took up positions outside the hanger, which is typically empty, due to the threat of collapse.
