Bill Ricci wasn’t on duty when he and 87 other firefighters from the Clifton Fire Department took buses to and from Ground Zero to assist with rescue and recovery efforts in the days and weeks after 9/11, he told state lawmakers Thursday.
Like many, he volunteered. And nearly 18 years later, his health has suffered for it.

A Pawtucket Fire Department injury report obtained by Target 12 blames an out-of-service ladder truck, a lack of funding to repair it, training, and a number of other issues for an injury to a firefighter that resulted in him losing his foot.
The firefighter's foot was amputated 15 days after he was injured during a May 15 triple-decker fire at 579 Central Ave.

VIDEO: A pair of Baton Rouge firefighters are being praised for taking swift action after a woman was carried away by flood water Thursday morning.
WBRZ was rolling as the driver's sedan went underwater at the Acadian underpass near I-10.
As the woman's vehicle is carried away in the several-feet-deep water, two Baton Rouge firefighters rush in to save the driver trapped inside.

Sparks from a hammer driving a metal stake into the ground ignited a 2018 blaze in Northern California that killed a firefighter and became the largest wildland fire in state history, officials said Thursday.
The blaze started July 17, 2018, in Mendocino County and quickly spread, aided by dry vegetation, strong winds and hot temperatures.
