Firefighter cancer bill advances in North Carolina House

Legislation designating nine types of cancer as on-the-job injuries for firefighters cleared a House committee Tuesday despite opposition from a powerful lobbying group. Statistically, firefighters are at a higher risk than the general public for esophageal, intestinal, rectal, testicular, brain and oral cavity cancers, as well as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma and mesothelioma.

Spokane firefighters practice attack strategies for wildfire season

“Each wildfire season seems to be getting worse and worse each year,” Spokane Valley Firefighter, Scott Niebuhr, said. With that in mind, firefighters start preparing months in advance. Wednesday, Spokane Valley and Spokane County firefighters practiced two different fire attack strategies: mobile and progressive.

No injuries after Spokane house fire caused ceiling to collapse on top of firefighter

A firefighter was unhurt after a ceiling collapsed during a house fire on N. Day Mt. Spokane Road. The owner of the home in the 19000 block of N. Day Mt. Spokane road noticed burn marks coming through the ceiling Wednesday and acted quickly to try and extinguish it with a fire extinguisher and then a garden hose.

Hillsville (VA) Fire Apparatus Totaled

 
 

Investigating Virginia State Trooper S.M. Cochran wrote in his report that a 2004 Sterling fire truck driven by Dennis Andrew Akers, 29, of Hillsville, was responding to a fire call when it approached a 1987 Ford Ranger driven by Joseph Glenn Semones, 69, of Hillsville.  

Cochran’s report states that the fire truck changed lanes to pass the Ford Ranger when the Ranger started to make a left turn into a field. The fire truck, while trying to avoid the Ford Ranger, lost control and overturned. Both Akers and a passenger, Michael Paul Martin, 33, of Hillsville, were transported from the scene by ambulance to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. Both were treated and released that night.
