VIDEO: There's new information about July's deadly cargo ship fire in Port Newark, as the Coast Guard previewed Wednesday's public hearing.
Firefighters 45-year-old Augusto Acabou and 49-year-old Wayne Brooks Jr. were killed when a massive fire overtook an Italian cargo ship in Port Newark on July 5, 2023.

PHOTOS: On Jan. 10, 1962, all the talk was about bitter cold. At 3 p.m., with the temperature only 4 degrees, Carson Crocker was cutting a customer's hair at 702 Chouteau Avenue. Police officer Kenneth Jones tried to stay warm in his patrol car one block away. Major Nesbit worked inside the Ralston Purina feed mill that towered over the neighborhood just south of downtown.

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue officials say additional staffing is needed to keep up with higher call volumes. Calls for CKFR have been on the rise – increasing 35% in the last five years. In 2022, the district responded to 11,062 calls, of which 67% were for emergency medical services. Revenue, however, is not keeping up with the demand for and costs to provide such services.

PHOTOS: A person is recovering from minor injuries after a tree falling left them trapped in their car Tuesday afternoon.
Tacoma fire posted on X that a large tree fell on a vehicle in the 4700 block of S. 48th St. at 12:50 p.m. Pictures posted by Tacoma fire show that at least two cars were under the fallen tree.

Fire district leaders in Port Angeles and Sequim have agreed to a plan that sees three agencies automatically respond to and/or back each other up during a structure fire.
The move for an Automatic Aid Operational Plan started at a June meeting between Clallam County Fire District 2, District 3, and Port Angeles Fire District leaders and elected officials where they agreed to work with PenCom, Clallam County’s 9-1-1 center, to better collaborate fire/EMS response depending on location.
