Spokane's new emergency communications center taps next leader

Mission accomplished, for the most part. Spokane Regional Emergency Communications announced that its first director, Steve Reinke, will depart in September after shepherding the new agency through its launch on July 1 without the city of Spokane as a partner. Reinke was hired last year on a short-term basis to help guide the integration of multiple agencies across the county into a single emergency communications facility, now known as SREC.

Everett Fire Department Among First 25 Agencies Nationwide To Receive NFPA Grant

The Everett Fire Department is among the first 25 agencies nationwide to be awarded a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) grant. The grant allows the department to participate in the first round of the NFPA Community Risk Assessment (CRA) pilot project, which will eventually have 50 participating agencies.

Medical Lake voters will decide if city fire department is absorbed by Spokane County Fire District 3

Medical Lake has had its own fire department since 1904, but voters could decide next month to eliminate the department and transfer the city’s one fire station to Spokane County Fire District 3. If a simple majority of voters in both Medical Lake and Fire District 3 approve ballot measure 1 on Aug.

Left Hand Fire in Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest spreads into hard-to-access terrain

A fire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest grew from 20 acres to 160 acres as of Thursday as embers from the fire jumped outside fire lines. “We’ve been somewhat successful in dealing with those spot fires, but the fire perimeter is larger now,” Naches Ranger District spokesman Randy Shepard said, adding that the Left Hand Fire was not contained.
