Neighbors in Bellingham push back on new building codes designed to fight wildfires

Michael Feerer worries homes like those in Bellingham's heavily wooded Sudden Valley neighborhood could suddenly become a thing of the past. "This is why we live here in western Washington," Feerer said. "We've got this wonderful tree canopy that's integrated with our homes." Feerer, Executive Director of the Whatcom Million Trees Project, believes new state building codes aimed at making communities safer from wildfires will end up doing more harm than good.

Sky Valley volunteer firefighter dies in Index rock climbing accident

VIDEO: On Saturday, the Sky Valley Fire Department announced a volunteer firefighter in the force died from a rock-climbing accident. “Unfortunately, he’d only been here a couple of months and had gone through the training and he’d just started his career with us,” said Assistant Chief of Operations Ernie Walters.

VIDEO: Helmet camera footage reveals harrowing firefighting efforts in deadly Oklahoma apartment fire

New helmet camera footage obtained by FOX 25 shows a closer look at the battle firefighters had to face during a deadly apartment complex fire October 20 in northwest Oklahoma City. According to the Oklahoma City Fire Department, crews responded to a three alarm fire at the Penn Station apartment complex around 7pm that Friday, seeing smoke billowing from the building miles away.

Automatic gas shutoffs could cut San Francisco post-quake fires in half, expert says

VIDEO: A UC Berkeley researcher says that automatic gas shutoff devices, like those used in Los Angeles and Japan, could cut the number of post-earthquake fires in half in San Francisco.
